Clarins Water Lip Stain – Review!

To be completely honest with you, the main reason why I decided to pick these guys up was because I opened a tester in the store and noticed how delicious they smell. I am quite a sucker for nice scents especially something that smells like something you can eat, like delicious berries. But, the scent put a side, this was also an interesting product I wanted to do a review of.

The Clarins Water Lip Stain, are cute little bottles of very liquid lip stain, as the name would already tell you. I picked up two shades “03 Red Water” and “01 Rose Water”. The 01 Rose Water looks quite orange in the tube, but on the lip it turns pink.

The product comes in a see-trough glass tube, with a metallic red cap and a brush applicator. It looks and feels like a expensive product. I would say that Clarins price tag is in the lower end of high-end makeup and these guys retail for 28$. I don’t think that price-tag is horrific for a lipstick, but for a lip stain I feel it is maybe a bit up there in price. After all Korean Beauty are the expert of staining lip products and you could probably find a whole bunch of cheap lip stains with a similar feel to this one. Just on the top of my head I can mention those Labiotte Wine Lip Tints, that come in a super cute wine packaging (just google them, I am too lazy to take a picture!).

The imprortant thing is off course how they work. The nice thing about these is that you can choose what intensity you want. You can paint it on and let the product dry and get a opaque stain like “03 Red Water” in the picture above. Or you can put a little bit on the lips and blot it away and get a much more discreet look like I did with “01 Rose Water” below.

How long it will last on the lips depends on how you apply it. A light stain like I show here with “01 Rose Water” will last for several hours. I found that it usually took 4-5 hours before I wanted to reapply. If you want the more opaque look then you will have to be prepared to reapply more often. The opaque application lasted me 2 hours.

They usually fade away very even on me, which I appreciate. However, I did notice once that I had a bit of a try patch on my lips, that it did not fade the same way around this spot than on the rest of the lips. This makes me think that if you have very dry or chapped lips this may not be the right product for you if it wants to emphasize dryness.

Other than that they feel super light weight on the skin. Almost like you are wearing nothing. My favorite way of wearing them are to apply a soft tint, let it dry and then apply some balm over top so my lips get some moisture. It gives a very beautiful and natural look as well. Also, the fact that you can so easily control the intensity means that even the bright red could be worn as a soft tint during work hours, or as a opaque tint in the evening. So I find this to be very versatile.

Overall, these were a hit for me, but I think if you want to pickup one you really only need one shade, because worn as a tint they give quite a similar look.

And yes, strawberry candy scented! The reason why I picked them up in the first place.

With lip stains I have quite a difficult relationshipr. I like them theoretically, but they somehow never really work out for me, because of the dryness factor you mentoned with those as well. I for some reason just have the worst dry lips – especially now in winter. But my wallte is happy that for once I am not tempted by one of the reviews from you šŸ˜€
